To the Firegrounds

To the Firegrounds

In the aftermath of the fires, Sydney Wildlife Rescue took our brand new Mobile Care Unit into the firegrounds to search and care for fire affected wildlife and provide support to other wildlife rescue organisations.   We travelled to the south coast on several occasions, and also ended up in Lithgow, where we were part of a search and rescue team comprising  RSPCA, Animals Australia, WIRES and World Vets.  Our van enabled us to care for so many injured animals, literally taking carers and vets to them, instead of putting them through long and painful journeys to find help.  It took us three years of fundraising to get the van up and running, and it’s proven its worth in its first season on the road.  While, tragically, we couldn’t save them all, we gave it a darn good try, collecting wallabies, wombats, snakes, goannas, possums, echidnas and more.  They were given pain meds, x-rayed, bandaged, rehydrated, had their damaged eyes treated, and were fed, and covered in burn salve.  They’ll take a long time to recover, and some won’t make it, but at least we’ve given them a chance.
