08 Dec Helpful PPE
Northern Tablelands Wildlife Carers is grateful for a recent opportunity via a grant from the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife to purchase extra personal protection equipment for our members, carers and rescuers.
We have purchased much needed protective gauntlet sleeves for flying fox carers. While in care the young pups climb over ‘Mum’ and scratches occur. The gauntlets are also a safety feature as many flying foxes are caught on barbed wire fences. FNPW generosity in offering this grant allowed us to purchase enough gauntlets to equip all our vaccinated bat carers with a pair.
We also purchased snake protecting leggings (garters) which will help prevent snake bites when trained carers are relocating reptiles from homes and public areas.
One of our carers has expressed their great appreciation for grants such as this one, providing support in the difficult role that is caring for vulnerable wildlife:
“Always remember how much your grants mean to individual carers. We often feel alone when we spend hours rescuing an animal many kms away from where we live and knowing that organisations like yours appreciate what we do and make it possible to equip ourselves as much as possible, reminds us that others do care and that’s a big psychological help, so once again, many thanks.”
The attached photograph shows members at a recent reptile handling training event, at which the new snake garters were put to good use!
