05 Oct A team effort to Save a joey
Late on a Friday afternoon I receive a phone call to go and rescue an on foot joey 30 kilometres away, it is next to its dead mother who ran in to my car, she is in the ditch just at top of hill on the main road…uuh could you be more specific…..No …Ok..I will collect my volunteer carers and head out there….We arrive at said spot..to our frustration there was no ditch to speak of and nothing near the top of hill..we certainly caused quite a stir as we ran up and down this hill trying to find a dead roo and a baby joey…we split up and went in different directions but to no avail and darkness was descending on us and light was almost a figment of our imagination.. Last resort I phone member of public and told him of our plight….oh dear says he…I will meet you there in 15 minutes and show you where they are…and this could’nt have been an option at time of call…thinks me..but oh well at least the man was kind enough to phone and come out to show us the joey…we found the little joey as soon as he arrived and thank goodness he would not have made it through the night…we got him home to find he was riddled with maggots. They were coming out of his nose, mouth and ears and body…the poor little mite was very under weight and had pneumonia and of course was dehydrated…once we had cleaned him up and got him onto antibiotics and rehydrated him..we thought ok we are through the worst…24 hours later he started having seizures….got him onto medication and glucose and monitored him for days afterwards praying for a good outcome..well true to the strength of character of these amazing creatures he did a turnaround and is now on his way to being a strong handsome buck
